This increases the size of text files by about 5%, and compressed files by over 40%." Yes, but if the modem has on-board data-compression, it compresses the quoting back out before transmission. I'm using a pair of USR HST modems between work and home. Both computers address the modems at 19200 bps, and I get phenomenal throughput using UUCP 'f', even on pre-compressed binary files.
