Another way to get lots of soldiers is:

There is a certain bug in Defender of the Crown. If you put all of your men
into your campaign army and send them forth. Then let a piece of land between
your present territory and your home castle be taken, so that your Army is cut
off from your home castle on all sides by enemy territory. Then when the enemy
attacks your castle, your army will be brought back to defend the castle. but
they are cut off. So they are in two places at once. This gives you double your
men. This works from the computer side too. so don't attack the enemies home
castle with his campaign army cut off from the castle or his army gets doubled.
