To use the RM80 with the VAX 11/730 I removed the disk drive (R80) from the RM80 cabinet and plugged it into the IDC controller on the 11/730. After reformatting, it works fine, in fact there is not a single bad block on the whole disk. Sometimes when I spin up the disk the fault light comes on. This is not a serious problem since it is cleared when the 11/730 trys to boot. Pressing the fault switch when the fault light is on causes the front panel to show the FAULT and STAT1 lights. According to the 11/730 handbook this means "Read Write Diagnostic". Can anyone out there who has a copy of the RM80 service manual please tell me what this means and how to fix the problem. BTW, If you want to speed up your 11/730, replace the 44.444 meg xtal on the WCS module with a 47.9 meg xtal. Everything (IDC, UNIBUS, FPA, CPU) should still work fine. It makes for quite a noticable improvment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Patrick Young - Computing Services Department - University Of New South Wales ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
