Starting with System 5 (and definitely a must with system 6.0 and up) you must use the installer scripts to install the system files on your drive. There are all kinds of resources that need to be copied as well as the files themselves. Gone are the days of dragging the new system into the system folder. The docs should have pointed this out .... you MUST use the installer.
