I have had several problems with my HDFD also.  Most of the
problems I have seen have been related to formatting of the
floppy disks.  Out of 2 fresh boxes of disks that I tried to
format, I have been unable to format 6 of the disks.  3 of them
failed the first time, but after I reinserted the disk and initialized
it, it was "successful"...
