I typed "tty" and the terminal thought it was /dev/lp. It turns out the fellow before me had experimented with using an Imagewriter as a line printer and had linked /dev/lp to /dev/ttya. lpd and getty were fighting each other for control of the port. It would seem that too many system adminstrators spoil the OS! Thanks to Nick Katz for responding, (by the way, ports a or b work equally well) I haven't heard ANYTHING about AppleTalk.
