This is version 3.1D of the OS. However, I believe that hostname. (<--- that's a period) is the way you are supposed to specify that the machine is in your domain. As for NFS, I was getting mount failures as well, until I specified the entire domain name of each host in the /etc/exports file. Then, everything worked f fine.
