If you just took the HP cartridge and put it in a Sun cartridge tape
drive, that would explain why you couldn't read the tape.  The HP and Sun
formats are completely incompatible.  I think the HP tape may even move in
the opposite direction than the Sun one, but as I've only played with a HP
tape drive for a few hours, I'm not 100% sure of that.
