Has anyone managed to get the rpcmand program (from the '87 Sun User Group
tape) to work under SunOS 4.0.1?  I'm running into a problem where the
driver cannot talk to the local_daemon.

I have managed to get a server and client of my own devising to talk to
each other, but I still don't see how what I've learned there can be
applied to making rpcmand work.

Qualify nearly everything.
