With Emacs 18.52:

sort-fields sets point and mark to the beginning of the region.  Point and
mark should be preserved, so that another sort-fields command can be
issued.  

sort-fields appears to be a stable sort, although the documentation doesn't
mention this.  If it is stable, it should be documented.  If it isn't, a
stable version should be provided.
