I know what you mean.  A user here asked me to set this up a bit
differently -- she just wanted all new groups added automatically to
the end of her .gnewsrc.  I haven't gotten around to completing it
yet, but will this week (just gotta rewrite news-add...).

Yes, I'd like this too.  It must have gone against Matt's desire to
completely integrate news and mail (see his notes in the manual about
this).  I'd just like to use mh-smail...
