How about:

setenv NEWSPOSTER 'emacsclient %h'
setenv MAILPOSTER 'emacsclient %h'

and add .rnhead or whatever to your auto-mode-alist to call your Gnews subset.
Looking at the header will tell if it is mail or a posting.
