I have been using their VMS compiler for about a year and am satisfied that it is a very fine piece of software. It is very solid, it can link with C (or vice versa) libraries or VMS system libraries. It installed very smoothly, works with the VMS Debugger (with a few minor problems), has a good FileSystem module as well as a complete RMS interface module. I have never found any instance of incorrect code production. Now, I get a sinking feeling every time I must write code with the DEC C compiler at the great weight of possible problems in my C code that could never be introduced into the code if it had been in M2. I don't have a team of programmers available to insure that my superfast DEC VMS C program is anywhere near as reliable as I am used to producing with M2. At any rate, NOT MUCH MORE THAN A MONTH AGO I talked directly to Romeo et al. at Logitech and asked them specifically about their "getting out of the compiler business". They denied it and further, sent me a new update for the VMS M2 compiler since then. Is it possible that your Logitech info is wrong? Even if true, I would recommend that, if possible, you obtain their VMS compiler if you have to use a VMS environment. It is solid enuf that patching should not be an issue, at least in the near term. I can't believe that someone else won't pick it up for support. An alternative might be to obtain the compiler from its original developer, Dr. Joachim Schmidt at Fachbereich Informatik def Universitaet Frankfurt. - Tom Breeden tmb@virginia.EDU -> Internet tmb@virginia -> BITNET
