elm recognizes the  ~userid convention  but not ~ by itself.  As it now
stands, elm complains about an unknown home directory of "".  One
small enhancement I would suggest for version 2.3 is that given
~/whatever, the ~ would default to the current user's home directory.
This would be consistent with most shell behavior and save a small
amount of typing.
