I shell alias and a one-line MHL template. That's it. To wit:

alias repli 'repl -filt mhl.repl'

And, in ~/Mail/mhl.repl:

body:component="> ",offset=0

Obscure, yes, but not nearly as difficult as you make it look. And though MH
may have a rough learning curve, there are many MH stUds who are glad to
help.
