The 'nnmaster' program marks a group as BLOCKED while it is updating the database for that group. Did you try to run 'nn' soon after you started the 'nnmaster' daemon? If so, 'nn' will generally exit after a couple of groups (if you are lucky) becasue all the other are BLOCKED by the daemon. I learnt about this the hard way. If you want to verify my opinion try running the program 'nnadmin' and execute a 'Validate' in the first menu and you will immediately see all the groups that are BLOCKED. The only way out of this is to just sit around until the updates are complete (this takes forever in the first run of NN package), after that it isn't so bad since it is update every so often (depending on how nnmaster was invoked).
