Advertising (offering to sell) is verboten; news (and new product announcements are NEWS) is legit. Press releases for GS/OS System Disk V and Macintosh System 7 have been posted to the net (as has quite a bit of information about how to order AW 3.0 althouth not by anyone at Claris). The FACT of a new version and it's features IS a legitimate function of BITNET certainly and the Internet as well I believe. A reasonable rule of thumb might be: if the content (the information, not necessarily the verbatim text) of a release will appear (has appeared) in InfoWorld, MacWeek, InCider, or similar as editorial (news) copy not an ad, then it should violate the nets rules. Most of the info about AW 3.0 appeared as news in A2-Central, but not everyone reading comp.sys.apple subscribes to A2-Central. Claris has lawyers; they could verify the legality of my commonsensical assessment.
