One additional point about the ST-4096 in the UNIXPC:

one CAN simply specify that it has 8 heads (instead of 9) and then format it;
you'll have the same capacity then as the "stock" Miniscribe 6085 which does
have only 8 heads and 1024 cylinders.

The ideal solution is to perform one or both of the various upgrades to be
able to use any disk (st-506/412 MFM) one has at hand.
