Most files you find are compressed with BITS=16. To fix this I get the compress v4 distribution, which is on uunet in the comp.sources.unix archive, or for that matter in any other comp.sources.unix archive, and fix it so that it will compile with BITS=16. Then I track down and kill the other copy of compress. Doing this also gets you all the other goodies which was in the compress v4 distribution.
