Better than {\em...} An obvious point, I suppose, but if your editor allows macros and you are inclined to use them, then it really doesn't matter if the "real" commands were Ctrl-F8 2 4 or {\em...}. What might matter to some people is that WP, being semi-wysiwyg, will use a different display mode (usually color) to indicate the change and recalculate the soft word-wrap on the screen according to the new character widths.
