Thanks to everyone who sent me mail with advice on my tar problems.
The problem was indeed retensioning.  I renamed /dev/TAPE.CART to
/dev/TAPE.CART.RET (for retension), and linked /dev/r41t to /dev/TAPE.CART.
All is now copacetic.  Thanks for the help, guys!
