Subject: when printing large file to lp, system freezes

When I print a large (100K+) file to lp, through a serial port at 9600 baud,
the system will hang until it has sent the entire file to the printer.
Of course, this is quite unacceptable, and would like to get it corrected.

Any ideas?

System: Convergent S-640 (Miti Frame II) Ctix 5.22
        8 megs
        4 port 422
        20 port 232 with no accelerator board
        68881 float chip
