For those of you who have access to a cube but don't sit in front of it,
and want to use Mathematica:
I recently found that you can fire up a terminal-based Mathematica kernel
via

% cd /NextApps/Mathematica.app/Kernel/NeXT/StartUp
% ../mathraw

[modulo a capital letter or two; it was typed from memory]

There may be a much prettier way to do this, but I don't know what it is.
