Whilst it may not be immediately applicable, the caching of and need for explicitly opening your own font which has an otherwise system used name is documented in Chapter 4 of the Pixrect Reference Manual. In my copy which is Revision A dated 9th May 1988 for Sun-OS Version 4, that's on Page 44. It is however talking about pf_open() and pf_open_private(), which would obviously have to be used from within your own program.
