In response to the console locking up on AUX:
My AUX used to exhibit this problem and I believe I fixed it by changing
the line in /etc/inittab for the console getty to:
co::respawn:/etc/getty console co_9600 </dev/console >/dev/console 2>&1

Check using "ps -e" to see if the getty's terminal is console.
