I need to add another input device (a barcode reader) such that it's output is 
recognized by the X server.  The device in question generates ascii strings.

What is the best method to integrate this device into the X environment?

So far, I have done some prototypes that after some other intermediate 
manipulation of the data can register the new input source via the 
XtAppAddInput.

This allows for a clean solution on a per application basis, but does
not give a clean solution for a system solution.
