Each machine has a table that is used to convert keycodes (the physical location of the keys on the keyboard) to keysyms (an abstract definition of the key). I us usually best to stick with keysyms whenever possible. NOTE: xmodmap needs to be called everytime the server is started so you need to put the xmodmap command in your .login or .xsession file.
