Running GNU Emacs version 18.52 (BSD 4.3) and 18.54 (SCO Xenix/386):
According to the on-line documentation, the function "expand-file-name"
ought to "Convert FILENAME to absolute, and canonicalize it.".
It sometimes fails to do the latter:

(expand-file-name "/usr/../")
"//"

(expand-file-name (expand-file-name "/usr/../"))
"/"
