It has something of a fractal >character to it. I haven't seen the image you mention, but on the Alliant in the USC Computer Animation Lab I saw a 3-d image of Yosemite Valley. It was generated by texture mapping a Land-Sat image of the region on top of a contour model. Pretty darned impressive.
