Word 4.0 will run under A/UX 1.1, because I've done it, and Excel 2.2 is supposed to be A/UX compatible. If you can run under A/UX (which requires 32bit clean, amongst other things) you're actually a long way towards full compatibility -- so it looks like Microsoft is making headway.
