Inside Macintosh (vols I-V) is the definitive reference for Macintosh Toolbox
and OS functions, procedures, and utilities.

It groups all of these into their respective Managers, such as the Window
Manager, Desk Manager, Memory Manager, Resource Manager, etc.

It lists the functions available, describes the function and interface to
each, and lists the call to each in Pascal.  Notes are included for Assembly
Language programmers.

Vols I-III are about the classic (Plus and pre-Plus) Macintoshes, vol IV-V
include the updates to the Toolbox and OS introduced with the SE and the II.

I'm going through them right now, and it's not easy.  If you want to approach
it from what's currently available, you have to read through vol I (say, about
the Resource Manager) and then lookup the updates in vol 4-5.  I'm just going
to read through them, vol by vol., and try to assimilate all of it as I go.

There is a cross-ref available, called XREF.

All of these volumes (including XREF) are published by Apple Computer, and
should be available at bookstores which have an extensive Computing section,
or through TechAlliance (you'll have to call Renton, WA information to get
the number) or through APDA (Apple Programmers and Developers Association)
(800-282-APDA for customer service)

I bought my through APDA (I'm a member:  $20 annual), but found out that
TechAlliance was cheaper than retail.
