Inside Mac is a series of books published by Addison-Wesley and available in technical bookstores as well as chains such as B.Dalton across the country. They are somewhat expensive, so some get by with just a few volumes. Volumes I, II and IV are vital. III is hardware and summary and V is color, essentially. Volumes I, II and III are available bound together--IV and V update the earlier volumes. There is also a comprehensive index available (another book). When you see a reference to II-254, they mean page 254 in volume II of the set. You can get along with the IM books if you have someone else's technical reference, but since that book will have been based on Inside Mac, most serious programmers want the original available, as well. However, it is somewhat frustrating that IM is all Pascal with some assembly. There have been some good Mac tech refs published which describe the toolbox in either C or assembly language, which is clearly more useful if that's your native tongue. Get-a your Inside Mac!
