Is there a way, or could there be a way, in which rgb calls in code running
on a monochrome server could generate dithering patterns?

I was prompted to ask after using "xgen" to create, very easily!, a 
personalised control area on my display. By choosing various background
colours this looks very good on a 3/60FC running X11V3 but less good on
a good old 3/50. I guess there would need to be a flag to say " if I'm
running on a monochrome server do colour intensity to dithering"

Is there a mechanism for this - would it be possible?
