We just installed Ardent's version 2 of Xwindows last week.
It replaces the generic MIT cfb code by TITAN code resulting in an XPutImage
speed increase from 100KB /sec to 800KB /sec.
I don't use Pixmap double-buffering, so cant comment on that.
Perhaps this new release may solve your other XPutImage problems too.
