Dunno about Scott Craig's problem with "cat | lp"; what I use is essentially:

     pr  -e   -o5   [ -t ]  file(s)  |  lp

and have had no problem for 2 years.  The "-t" suppresses the date/time/name
heading and top/bottom margins for those times in which I have just prior to
printing formatted the material precisely as I want it printed.
