This hardware includes Sun Microsystems Computers running SunOS 4.0 (a variant of Berkeley UNIX), Apollo workstations running DOMAIN, Apple Macintoshes, and assorted other machines. As well as installation and maintenance of software packages obtained from external sources, the programmer will modify software to make it suitable for our environment, and create new software where no suitable packages are available. Major Responsibilities Text processing packages used by the department include TeX and troff on the UNIX based systems, Interleaf on the Apollos, MacWrite, Word 3.0, and others on the Macintoshes. A variety of packages for graphics, image processing, and display are used. The programmer would be expected to become familiar with these packages and their operation, and be able to provide consultation to users on their usage, in addition to installation and maintenance. Organizational Relationship This position is supervised by the department Facilities Manager. Supervision Received Computer programmers are supervised by the Facilities Manager, but are expected to need minimal supervision and operate in cooperation with other technical staff. Qualifications Applicants should have a degree in Computer Science, or equivalent software experience. A good working knowledge of the UNIX operating system is essential. Familiarity with software mentioned above, and a good background in text processing and graphics would be advantageous.
