Maimonides was a 12th-centry Spanish-born Egyptian physician, philosopher, and teacher. He is one of the greatest theologians in Jewish history. (Acronyms are a common method of abbreviation in Hebrew; they work better than in English because only consonants have letters, and vowel marks can be attached to any letter. You thus do not end up with unpronouncable names like DTMF.) --Steve Bellovin
