So you have no way of knowing whether a bang path was originally a source route or not. If the intent was that bang paths and source routes were not the same thing, converting one to the other would seem a bad idea. It seems to me that while the letter of the law would not require it, the spirit implies a symmetry between bang paths and source routes. It's impolite to break this symmetry.
