I believe you're referring to "vertical recording format" devices.
Kodak makes them (through their Spin Physics subsidiary, perhaps?).

I remember an advert.  in some trade rag (the kind that go free to
business addresses and rarely or never to personal subscribers) a few
months ago.  If they're shipping, it's probably to OEMs for use in
specialized devices such as well loggers.  Hit up Kodak for more info.
