FastBack II from Fifth Generation Systems is excellent backup software. 
It is fast, can do 2 different degrees of data compression and works with
just about every tape drive on the market.  If it won't work with a piece
of hardware you have, give Fifth Generation a call and they will try to
make it work.  I have been using it now for several weeks and it seems to
be a very solid, well thought out piece of software.  I recommend it
