What step am I missing and/or doing wrong? Well, it may be that the downloaded file you get after de-binhexing has a .SIT suffix. If this is so, you've now got a stuffit archive. Stuffit is a PD (at least, the extraction portion is) package that allows you to archive a group of files together, compressed.
