Just a comment:
I recently (december) I bought a Nova 40 external drive from Microtech.
In general, I am happy with it because it is very fast (18 ms
access time.) But it is pretty LOUD.  I think it's the fan.

I should add that I have seen a Nova drive in a friend's
office and it seemed quiet.
