I need to somehow inquire if the devices are functioning. Will an "open" on any of these devices fail if something major is wrong ? I guess what I really want is for some kind of ioctl call to make the devices run a selftest of some sort and report the results back to me. A related question: are there any tests that can be performed from software alone ?
