The suggestions have all pointed at using xterm to set up a console window, using xterm -C to indicate the console window, and xterm -ut to indicate windows that should not get console messages. I have added these options to my .xinitrc, and now the console messages are being written into *each* xterm window rather than across the entire screen! While this is perhaps a modest improvement, I don't want the messages at all, except in the one console window. What am I doing wrong? carol P.S.
