I'm using GNUmake 3.54 on sun386i and sun/4.

In section 5.3.2 The vpath Directive, the example is
vpath *.h ../headers

Looks like the '*' should be a '%' (I found this confusing).

Also vpath and VPATH appear inconsistent in VPATH uses an '=' and vpath doesn't
