They had 1/2 dozen or so landing craft and "captured" a public beach house. The marines touted this as a recruitment tool. Then some groups here started objecting to it saying (and I'm heavily summarizing) "this will glorify militarism and might harm the beach ecology". Then the beach landing was called off due to the protests. Next, the vfw got into the fray, they threatened to call off their convention here, (heavily summarizing) "if Duluth can't let our boys have the landing and get training, then Duluth is not good enough for our convention". I am interested in what sort of public responses have you heard of in other cities with similar recruitment excercises. Now note, I'm not trying to take sides and be political about this. I'm just interested in how people react to the military. This issue might be skirting the bounds of the list, so it might be more appropriate if you email them to me. [mod.note. A slow news day, so I decided to run this one up the flagpole and see who burns it 8-) I agree completely with Alyce; so much so, in fact, that I will not post any followups to sci.military.
