Minor correction: Vbase is a product of Ontologic and GemStone is a product
of Servio-Logic.  Also, the Iris OODBMS is available from Hewlett-Packard.

Since you were looking for freebies, Postgres 1.0 is available free 
via anonymous ftp to postgres.berkeley.edu.  You can also get them to 
ship you a tape for a $150 US.  Caveat: I have no idea how good it is.
