In a few environments there are recommended ways of exchanging data
between various applications.  I am thinking of something similar to
the Macintosh clipboard.

Does anyone know if there have been any attempts of creating something
similar for Unix or other 'open' environments? I'd appreciate
if you could give be pointers to it.
