I use it all the time. My statement about it lacking record I/O was intended to show that it is not the be-all and end-all of operating systems and programming environments. It was a poorly chosen example because, as people have pointed out, record I/O is not that big a deal. Still, there are various high-level features which I think should be implemented in a layer below that of the user (mostly for the sake of performance). UNIX is admirable for the number of extraneous things it doesn't put in the kernel, but there are things that I wished it had there. hal.
