Hopefully that will be resolved by the time you read this message and then there will be no question as to who I am. " Gee, maybe if you logged in as OTHER than: "From: root@crash.cts.com (Super user)" your name would accompany the postings! :-) and continues: " I do not dispute your findings but I did feel that others should benifit from others opinions on the subject. Hence, the posts. I hope Amiga users find this discussion enlightening and useful. " My next door neighbor benefitted; he was able to get BOTH his Macs' HDs replaced on the present HD recall program after seeing my post of the Service Note from Computer Plus. 'Sfunny Apple hasn't contacted their registered owners about the problem. One thing is clear: the problem is far more widespread than people would otherwise believe (ref. the 690,000 bad HDs that Apple is presently replacing, and the 500+ emails I've received from people responding to my postings in comp.sys.amiga, comp.sys.att, and unix-pc.*). The problem is also NOT limited to Seagate. As Douglas Peale (UC, Santa Barbara. Physics Computer Services) implied in his posting reply, the HD manufacturers are ALL seeking better lubricants for their platters, and the choice of lubricant is proprietary and/or a trade-secret. Consider the recent fiasco with Miniscribe; their platter supplier was shipping junk (to Miniscribe) recently, and the situation was so bad there was real concern Miniscribe was going belly-up. Only a cash-infusion by "Big Red" (who is this? Unisys???) last week saved their hide. Thad Floryan [ thad@cup.portal.com (OR) ..!sun!portal!cup.portal.com!thad ]
